Iceland VSK & Kennitala Validator (Skatturinn)

Enter a short Icelandic VSK number or a 10-digit kennitala. VIESAC resolves the company in Skatturinn Fyrirtækjaskrá and returns the VSK as the VAT identifier when the registration is active (Virk skráning).

How Icelandic VSK and kennitala verification works

In Iceland, value added tax is called virðisaukaskattur (VSK). The short VSK number (for example 23148) is the VAT identifier. Companies also have a 10-digit kennitala (540269-6029). You can enter either form; VIESAC stores and displays the VSK as the VAT number.

Iceland is not part of the EU VAT system, so an Icelandic number cannot be checked in EU VIES. VIESAC queries Skatturinn Fyrirtækjaskrá (API by kennitala, HTML search by VSK) and returns VALID when the status is Virk skráning and a VSK is present.

Questions about Icelandic VSK and kennitala

What formats does this tool accept?

A short VSK (5–6 digits, e.g. IS23148) or a 10-digit kennitala (e.g. IS5402696029 or 540269-6029). Both resolve through Skatturinn; the result VAT is the VSK.

What is the difference between VSK and kennitala?

VSK is the Icelandic VAT number. Kennitala is the company registry ID. Lookups may start from either, but audits and certificates show the VSK as the VAT number and the kennitala next to the company name.

Can I verify an Icelandic VAT number in EU VIES?

No. Iceland is not an EU member state and is not covered by EU VIES. Icelandic numbers are checked in the Skatturinn Company Registry (Fyrirtækjaskrá). VIESAC runs that lookup and can store an audit PDF.

When is a number shown as VALID?

VALID means Fyrirtækjaskrá returned an active registration (Virk skráning) with a VSK number. Active kennitala records without a VSK are shown as invalid for VAT purposes.

Does VIESAC support bulk checking for Icelandic numbers?

Yes. You can upload Icelandic counterparties in CSV, call the REST API (/api/v1/validate and /api/v1/audit), or monitor a VSK/kennitala so a later status change can be picked up on the next check.
