What is a UK EORI number and how does it work?

A UK EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is a unique customs identifier issued by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to businesses and sole traders moving goods into or out of Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) and Northern Ireland.

Following the end of the Brexit transition period, trade between the United Kingdom and the European Union is subject to full customs formalities. To clear commercial shipments through the Customs Declaration Service (CDS), submit import or export declarations, or act as an importer of record, businesses must have an active UK EORI number.

Understanding UK EORI formats: GB vs. XI and VAT alignment

UK EORI numbers follow specific standardized patterns depending on VAT registration and geographic scope:

VIES VAT Registration

Standard GB EORI (Great Britain): Starts with GB followed by a 9-digit or 12-digit number (typically the trader's UK VAT number followed by 000). Non-VAT registered traders receive a unique 12-digit number prefixed with GB.

EOS / HMRC EORI Registration

Northern Ireland EORI (XI): Under the Northern Ireland Protocol / Windsor Framework, businesses moving goods between Northern Ireland and the EU or non-EU countries require an EORI number beginning with XI.

Our validator accepts UK EORI numbers entered with or without the GB prefix, and automatically converts legacy or colloquial UK prefixes to the official GB identifier required by HMRC customs systems.

How HMRC real-time EORI verification protects your supply chain

Shipping goods to or from the UK with an invalid or dormant EORI number leads to customs border holds, demurrage charges, missed delivery deadlines, and rejected CDS declarations. By checking UK EORI numbers via HMRC before dispatch, freight forwarders, logistics operators, and cross-border sellers ensure smooth customs clearance at UK border control posts.

Frequently asked questions about UK EORI validation

What is the correct format for a UK EORI number?

A UK EORI number for Great Britain starts with GB followed by 9, 12, or 15 digits (for example, GB123456789000). If a business is VAT registered, the middle 9 digits are usually its UK VAT registration number. Northern Ireland businesses may also have an XI EORI number for EU customs procedures.

Can I enter a number without the "GB" prefix or with "UK"?

Yes. Our tool is designed for maximum convenience: you can enter pure digits (e.g. 123456789000), and it will automatically prepend GB. If you type UK123456789000, our system automatically corrects it to the official ISO format GB123456789000 before querying HMRC.

Does having a UK VAT number automatically mean I have a UK EORI?

No. Having a valid UK VAT number with HMRC does not automatically grant you an EORI number. Traders must apply separately to HMRC for EORI activation. Until HMRC approves and activates the customs role, the EORI will return as NOT ACTIVE in customs registers.

How do I validate UK EORI numbers in bulk or via an API?

If your company processes multiple shipments daily or wants to integrate automated UK EORI and VAT checks into your ERP, warehouse, or transport management system, contact us at support@viesac.eu for bulk verification solutions.
