Validateur de numéro EORI Portugal (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira — AT)
Validate Portuguese Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) numbers directly against official customs registries. Verify whether a Portuguese PT EORI number is valid and active for import, export, STADA declarations, Port of Sines container shipping, Lisbon Airport air freight, and Atlantic maritime transit compliance.
What is a Portuguese EORI number (PT) and who needs one?
A Portuguese EORI number (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) is a unique customs identifier assigned by the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT) to companies and individuals conducting customs-related business in Portugal and across the European Union.
Under Article 9 of the Union Customs Code (UCC), having an active PT EORI number is mandatory for customs clearance of goods imported from or exported to third countries (such as Brazil, the United States, the UK, Angola, or China). In Portugal, this is vital for maritime shipping through the deep-water Port of Sines (Porto de Sines) — the primary Atlantic gateway handling over 50% of the country's containerized volume — industrial shipments via the Port of Leixões in the north, the Port of Lisbon, and air cargo via Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) and Porto Airport (OPO). Without an active EORI, declarations cannot be processed in the STADA (Importação / Exportação) or NCTS systems.
Portuguese EORI vs. Portuguese VAT (NIF / NIPC / IVA)
While Portuguese companies share the same 9-digit numeric foundation for both tax and customs, they operate under distinct regulatory scopes:
Portuguese NIF / NIPC / IVA Number (Autoridade Tributária / VIES)
Assigned by AT for domestic tax management (IRS/IRC) and intra-EU trade. Format: PT + 9-digit NIF/NIPC (e.g. PT500000000). A valid VAT registration alone is not sufficient to declare goods with customs for international trade outside the European single market.
Portuguese EORI Number (AT Alfândegas / EU EOS)
Must be formally requested and activated with AT Aduanas for import, export, and transit declarations with third countries. Uses the format PT + 9 digits and must be recorded in the EU EOS central registry to be accepted by the STADA system.
Portuguese entities can request EORI registration online through the Portal das Finanças (Aduanas / Registo EORI) using their fiscal credentials. Non-EU companies must register in the first EU Member State where they lodge a customs declaration.
Strategic Atlantic Maritime Gateway: Port of Sines & Leixões
Due to its strategic geographical position on the Atlantic basin, Portugal serves as a major transshipment hub connecting South America, North America, Africa, and Western Europe. Verifying PT EORI numbers prior to vessel arrival at Terminal XXI in Sines or Leixões prevents costly demurrage, customs holds, and supply chain bottlenecks.
Frequently Asked Questions about Portuguese EORI Numbers
What is the format of a Portuguese EORI number?
A Portuguese EORI number consists of the 2-letter country code PT followed by the 9-digit Portuguese tax number (NIF for individuals or NIPC for legal entities, e.g. PT500000000).
Can I check a Portuguese EORI number by entering only the 9 digits?
Yes. Our validator automatically identifies 9-digit Portuguese NIF/NIPC numbers and prepends the PT country prefix before querying the official EU EOS database.
How do I activate an EORI number in Portugal?
Registration is completed electronically via the Portal das Finanças under the Aduanas / EORI section, or through regional customs offices (Alfândegas). Registration is free of charge.
